Movie News, Buffy the Vampire Slayer Remake, Without Joss Whedon
An updated version of the beginning of the Buffyverse is underway. That’s right, the Hollywood remake machine continues to crank out ‘revisionings’ of classics. This time, it’s the 1992 Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
And there is something that every fan of the movie, tv series and/or comics should know. Joss Whedon is not involved at all; so far.

“Buffy” creator Joss Whedon isn’t involved…While Whedon is the person most associated with “Buffy,” Kuzui and her Kuzui Enterprises have held onto the rights since the beginning, when she discovered the “Buffy” script from then-unknown Whedon. She developed the script while her husband put together the financing to make the 1992 movie, which was released by Fox.
Kuzui later teamed with Gail Berman, then president of Sandollar Television, bringing back Whedon to make the TV series, which was produced by Fox TV and launched on the WB in 1997. Kuzui and Sandollar received executive producer credits on “Buffy” and its spinoff, “Angel.”
The producers do not rule out Whedon’s involvement but have not yet reached out to him. Speaking from Tokyo, Fran Kuzui said the company is constantly approached not only about sequels but theater, video games and foreign remakes for “Buffy.” When Vertigo’s Lee contacted them, they were intrigued.
Besides the lack of Whedon, the film itself may truly be a remake. New story, new character and simply scratch out the decades of character development and lineage. There apparently will be no connection to the tv series or any the characters either. This smell like the recent remake of Star Trek.
Each generation has its own vampire slayer this one may be a darker version, aimed at becoming a blockbuster event sized movie that could have it’s own franchise potential.
It could also end being completely lame and a huge money pit. Proving that Whedon’s touch is what truly made the series a phenomenon.

I think the idea is ridiculous. I understand someone other than Joss Whedon holding the rights to the buffyverse or some of the cast not wanting to be in it, but not asking for their involvement is just insane. And ditching the last ten years of history and backstory is just mindboggiling. At least New Line and Guillermo del Toro had the sense to seek Peter Jacksons help with The Hobbit. When and if this movie gets made, at least the way the article states, the fans will come out for the opening just to see how bad it is and then its straight to the $5.00 rack at Wal-Mart.

I agree!! im horrified! Many would say im sad for that but i struggle to care! I LOVE Buffy and everything that goes with it!! To attempt to do a movie without the original (surviving) characters is crazy talk!! Im not saying there’s no way it could be good, it may be to those who are just tuning in. But as i diehard fan im not sure id be able to bring myself to do it! lol. Id feel i was betraying it. We need Joss Whedon, David Boreanaz and SMG to be in it, save the world (again) and perhaps with the shanshu be together forever!…..told you some might say im sad!

If Whedon is not involved, then absolutely not.
Did you know that Fran Rubel Kuzui and Kaz Kuzui were credited in every single episode YET THEY DID NOTHING.
It is a known fact that they continue to get paid royalties, and were paid for each episode — yet they contributed absolutely nothing to the series or the spin-off, Angel.
They made money off a magnificent series based on their failed movie — not fair!!
If Whedon is not involved, then a stake should be put into this project.

It just doesn’t make any sense to throw away all of Joss Whedon’s work (and the other writers) along with alienating the fanbase that kept BtVS going since 1992.

without the original story line
this is NOT buffy.
Don’t call it buffy. it doesn’t even RESEMBLE the awesome that is buffy the vampire slayer.
