The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean
The story begins with a family being stabbed to death by a man named Jack, but quickly moves into more youth friendly storytelling. As the sole survivor of the attack, an 18-month old baby boy survived by leaving his crib and the house, to wander in a nearby graveyard. Realizing that the baby boy is orphaned, the ghostly residents of the graveyard adopt him. The name him Nobody, Bod for short, and allow him to live in their tomb.
Bod navigates among the headstones, asking questions learning about living and the dead. The story continues to follow Bod’s progress as he grows into a teen. Bod learns life’s lessons amid a bizarre cadre of ghosts, ghouls, witches and even some occasional human contacts.
Bod has a special guardian named Silas, who ensures that Bod gets the food, books, and other things he might need from the human world. But when the boy strays from his usual play among the headstones, he finds new danger and learns to test his limitations and strengths. He even acquires new skills he will need to survive within the confines of the graveyard and the world beyond.
