Akira
In the year 2019, the futuristic metropolis of Neo-Tokyo stands on an artificial island in Tokyo Bay. The city is politically volatile, as there is a powerful group of terrorist insurgents who stage terrorist attacks in the city to destabilize the corrupt government. The government is mostly managed by petty, greedy bureaucrats, and, as Colonel Shikishima observes later in the film, “has become a garbage heap run by a bunch of hedonistic fools.”
Blood: The Last Vampire
Set on the American Yokota Air Base located in post-WWII Japan, just before the beginning of the Vietnam War, Blood: The Last Vampire has Saya hunting vampiric demons by way of the blade (katana) for the U.S. government. As “the only remaining original” displays superhuman senses and strength, as well as cunning, resourcefulness, and skill in her mission to stop the brutal attacks.
Ghost in the Shell
A cyberpunk with focus on the ethical and philosophical ramifications of the merging of humanity and technology, Ghost in the Shell is a futuristic police thriller dealing with the exploits of Motoko Kusanagi, a member of the covert operations section of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission, Section 9, which specializes in fighting technology-related crime. Motoko is cybernetically specialized for her job, with her body almost completely mechanized, only her brain and a segment of her spinal cord being human. This leads to complex and interesting soul searching questions.
Ninja Scroll
An entire village has been wiped out by a mysterious plague and an anti-government conspiracy of invulnerable demons seems to be responsible. Now, Jubei, a wandering ninja, along with femme fatale Kagero team up to participate in the mission only after Jubei is fed a slow-acting poison. Ninja Scroll is well written and packed with tons of samurai action, supernatural fantasy with lots of blood and flesh.
